Water Conservation Tips

Just when we thought load shedding has become our most formidable bane, prevalent episodes of water cuts or restricted water usage has disproved that theory. Water is most vital and we only really realise how much of a dependency that we have on it, when our access becomes restricted. In light of the severe water-related problems that has been plaguing South Africa, now is a great time to start looking at effective ways of conserving water.  Play your part and consider utilising these effective water conservation tips.

  1. When you brush your teeth, do not let the tap run unnecessarily as it wastes a considerable amount of water, especially if you brush your teeth (and wash your face) for a longer period or brush your teeth several times per day.
  1. A low-flow showerhead can potentially save you 15 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower – enquire at your local hardware store about the availability of low-flow showerheads.
  1. Opt to use a front-loading washing machine as they are generally more energy and water-efficient than their top-loading counterparts.
  1. Use your water meter to pick up any potential hidden leaks. Take a reading on your water meter. For a period of two hours thereafter, refrain from using any water. You should then take a second reading. If there is a considerable change in the reading, there is definitely a leak.
  1. You should also check your toilet for leaks. This can be easily achieved by putting food colouring in your toilet tank. Then have a look at to see if it seeped into the bowl without flushing. The colouring in the bowl will definitely signify a leak (if it seeped through).
  1. Always utilise appropriate sized pans or pots to boil water. For example – there is no reason to fill a large pot of water if you are only cooking for one person.
  1. If you are going to wash your dishes by hand, ensure that you do not let the tap run. Rather fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water.
  1. You should refrain from utilising your toilet as a garbage disposer as it wastes an unnecessary amount of money when it could have been discarded into a bin with minimal effort.
  1. You should only utilise your washing machine when you have enough dirty laundry to make up a full load. This will ensure that you conserve both water and energy.
  1. If you wash your car at home, make sure that you use a hosepipe that has a self-closing nozzle.
  1. As much as possible, you should try to water your plants during the early morning hours or in the evening since temperatures are cooler then. The temperature is higher between 10:00 and 15:00 so that means plants can lose up to 90% of water to evaporation.
  1. When permissible, try to use waterless products. Have a look at our quick drying waterless hand sanitiser. It is convenient as you do not need soap or water to clean your hands (or a towel to dry them) and it kills 99.99% of microorganisms on your hands.
